In the textile and clothing industry, labels must remain legible through repeated washing, drying, ironing, and friction. Thermal transfer ribbons produce durable prints on wash care labels, hang tags, size stickers, and brand labels. Common substrates include satin, nylon, polyester fabric, coated paper, and synthetic films (PET) for tags.

Different ribbon types serve specific apparel labeling needs:
- Wax ribbons are suitable only for short‑term, non‑washable applications such as temporary price stickers or disposable promotional hang tags that will not be laundered.
- Wax‑resin ribbons offer moderate wash resistance and are used on coated paper hang tags and some fabric care labels where occasional gentle washing is expected. They provide good print density at a reasonable cost.
- Resin ribbons – often referred to as wash care ribbons – are the preferred choice for durable textile labeling. They bond strongly to satin, nylon, and polyester care labels, offering excellent resistance to hot water, detergents, and high‑temperature ironing. These ribbons are essential for garments that require frequent washing or industrial laundry.
- TTO (Thermal Transfer Overprinter) ribbons are used for on‑demand printing of variable information (e.g., size, batch number) on flexible film packaging for clothing items or on adhesive labels applied directly to polybags.
- Color resin ribbons allow brands to print colored logos, size indicators, or care symbols on fabric labels, enabling visual coding without separate colored inks.
- Hot stamping foil is widely used for luxury apparel branding, applying metallic gold, silver, or holographic finishes to hang tags, leather patches, and woven labels to enhance premium appearance.
For any label that must survive repeated home or commercial laundering, full resin ribbons are strongly recommended. Wax‑based ribbons should be avoided for wash‑care applications.
