Different ribbon types serve specific medical applications:
- Wax ribbons are rarely used in healthcare due to low durability. They may appear only on non‑critical, short‑term indoor labels like temporary storage bins.
- Wax‑resin ribbons offer moderate resistance and can be used on patient wristbands or pharmacy labels where exposure to alcohol is minimal.
- Resin ribbons are the standard for most medical and lab labels. They withstand autoclaving, aggressive solvents (e.g., xylene, ethanol), and low temperatures (liquid nitrogen). Resin is essential for specimen containers, surgical instrument pouches, and implantable device labels.
- TTO (Thermal Transfer Overprinter) ribbons are used on flexible packaging for pharmaceuticals, such as pill blister foils or IV bag labels, enabling high‑speed on‑demand printing of lot numbers and expiration dates.
- Color resin ribbons (e.g., red for biohazard warnings) help highlight critical information on lab labels.
- Hot stamping foil is not typical in core medical labeling but may appear on premium pharmaceutical packaging or external retail‑facing medicine boxes.
