• Wax ribbons are suitable only for short‑term, dry‑environment labels such as outer case coding or non‑refrigerated shelf labels where moisture and grease are not factors. They offer low cost but minimal durability.
• Wax‑resin ribbons provide improved resistance to moisture and mild abrasion. They are commonly used on coated paper labels for refrigerated items (e.g., dairy, fresh produce) and for product packaging that experiences condensation but not deep freezing.
• Resin ribbons offer the highest durability against extreme cold, grease, and frequent handling. They are recommended for frozen food packaging (e.g., ice cream, frozen vegetables), deli items with oily surfaces, and any label that must survive wet or greasy environments.
• TTO (Thermal Transfer Overprinter) ribbons are specifically designed for high‑speed intermittent printing on flexible packaging films (e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene) used for snacks, bakery goods, and ready‑to‑eat meals. TTO ribbons provide excellent smear and scratch resistance for variable date and lot coding.
• Color resin ribbons can be used to print colored warning symbols, logo accents, or promotional text on food labels for brand differentiation.
• Hot stamping foil is rarely used in primary food labeling but may appear on premium beverage bottles (e.g., wine, spirits) or luxury confectionery packaging for metallic decorative effects.

For any label that will face moisture, cold, or grease, wax‑resin or resin ribbons are recommended. Wax ribbons should be limited to dry, short‑term indoor applications only.
